The British Rail Class 170 Turbostar diesel multiple unit, built 1998-2005 by Adtranz/Bombardier at Derby, revolutionised regional railways as the first purpose-designed privatisation-era train. Powered by MTU 6R 183TD13H engines producing 315 kW per car through Voith hydraulic transmission, the 100 mph capable units replaced aging first-generation DMUs with modern air-conditioned comfort and accessibility features. Seven sub-classes totalling 139 units served operators from Midland Mainline through to current East Midlands Railway, CrossCountry, ScotRail, and Northern fleets. Ongoing £23 million refurbishment programmes in 2025 position the aluminium-bodied fleet for continued operation through the 2030s despite decarbonisation pressures.
