These "Derby Heavyweight" units featured all-steel construction with twin AEC 150hp engines per power car and Wilson 4-speed epicyclic transmission. The class worked Glasgow suburban routes including the Cathcart Circle, cross-country services to Edinburgh via Shotts, and Ayrshire coastal services until withdrawal in August 1992 after 32 years of intensive Scottish operations. Eleven vehicles survive in preservation across five heritage sites, with operational examples at Great Central Railway (Nottingham) and Somerset & Dorset Railway.
