GWR No. 5080 Defiant was built at Swindon Works in May 1939, originally named "Ogmore Castle." In January 1941, during World War II, it was renamed "Defiant" after the Boulton Paul Defiant fighter aircraft that participated in the Battle of Britain, as part of a wartime program to rename several Castle Class locomotives after RAF aircraft. Initially allocated to Old Oak Common depot for express passenger work to Birmingham and the West Country, including prestigious services like the "Red Dragon," "Pembroke Coast Express," and "South Wales Pullman." The locomotive later moved to Wales, serving at Carmarthen from 1959 and finally at Llanelli from May 1961 until withdrawal in April 1963. After withdrawal, 5080 spent nearly eleven years (1963-1974) at Woodham Brothers scrapyard at Barry before being purchased by Birmingham Railway Museum Trust as spare parts for Clun Castle. However, restoration began in 1985, and the locomotive returned to steam in July 1987, operating on various heritage railways until its boiler certificate expired in 1997. Currently preserved at Tyseley Locomotive Works, where "The Defiant Club" fundraising group is working toward a £1 million restoration to return it to mainline operation.

This locomotive represents both the wartime patriotic spirit of locomotive naming and the successful preservation efforts that saved many Barry scrapyard locomotives for future generations.

Today, the company's engineering legacy lives on through extensive preservation efforts, heritage railways, and detailed model railway recreations that celebrate the finest traditions of British steam railway operation.

The GWR Lined Green with GW Crest livery represents the final evolution of Great Western Railway locomotive decoration, introduced in late 1934 and used until nationalisation in 1947. This dignified livery featured the company's distinctive Middle Chrome Green body colour with elegant orange and black lining, distinguished by the iconic "twin shield" crest displaying the coats of arms of London and Bristol side by side.

This livery replaced the earlier "shirt button" roundel branding and marked a return to heraldic insignia reflecting the GWR's founding purpose—linking the two great cities. The twin shield crest featured the arms of the City of London (St George's Cross with ceremonial sword) alongside the City of Bristol (ship and castle), symbolising the railway's role as the premier connection between the capital and the west.

Applied to all passenger and mixed-traffic locomotive classes including Castle, King, Hall, Manor, and Grange classes, this livery survived wartime austerity when most locomotives received unlined black paint. The finest examples continued to receive full lined green treatment throughout the Second World War, maintaining the GWR's reputation for locomotive presentation excellence until the company's final days in 1947.
