The British Rail Class 156 "Super Sprinter" is a highly successful diesel multiple unit built by Metro-Cammell between 1987-1989, with all 114 two-car units still in service after 37 years. Featuring 23-metre bodyshells with comfortable 2+2 seating, these units were designed for regional express services and operate across diverse routes from the Scottish West Highland Line to Northern England suburban networks. Powered by reliable Cummins NT855-R5 diesel engines driving Voith hydraulic transmissions, Class 156s offer 75 mph performance and BSI coupling compatibility with numerous other DMU classes. Currently operated by Northern Trains (68-70 units) and ScotRail (40-45 units), the fleet has undergone progressive refurbishments maintaining fitness for service. Replacement programmes target 2030-2033 withdrawals. Premium Realtrack OO gauge models (£270 RRP) feature dual motors and extensive detailing, whilst Dapol N gauge versions (£145-186 street price) offer excellent value with Next18 DCC compatibility across multiple authentic liveries spanning BR Provincial through contemporary operator schemes.
