British Rail Class 165 165001 Chiltern Railways Blue & White

Class & Prototype

  • Running Number: 165001

The British Rail Class 165 "Networker Turbo", introduced 1991-1992, was the first production British DMU with welded aluminium body construction. Built by BREL at York Works, 76 units were constructed in two sub-classes: Class 165/0 (39 units, 75 mph max) for Chiltern Railways' London Marylebone services with unique London Underground tripcocks, and Class 165/1 (37 units, 90 mph max) for Thames Valley operations from Paddington. Each vehicle carries one Perkins 2006-TWH turbocharged diesel engine (350 hp) with Voith hydraulic transmission. Seventy-five units remain in active service with Chiltern Railways and Great Western Railway after comprehensive refurbishment programmes including air conditioning installation and interior modernisation. Replacement is planned for the early 2030s with battery-electric traction. No ready-to-run models exist in any scale, though conversions are possible using discontinued Bachmann Class 166 models with Electrarail Graphics decal kits.
