Class & Prototype

  • Running Number: 166214

The British Rail Class 166 Networker Turbo Express represents Network SouthEast's premium express diesel multiple unit, with all 21 three-car units built by ABB Transportation at York between 1992-1993. Designed for Thames Valley express services, these air-conditioned trains featured 90 mph capability, carpeted interiors, and dual toilets distinguishing them from standard Class 165 units. Each unit contains three Perkins 2006-TWH 350 hp engines delivering 1,050 hp total through Voith hydraulic transmission. Following 2017 Bristol redeployment, the fleet serves South Wales, Bristol-area, and Devon operations. The recent £10 million Wolverton refurbishment (2021-2024) applied GWR green livery across all units, ensuring continued service into the 2030s. Bachmann produced five discontinued OO gauge variants covering NSE, Thames Trains, FGW, and GWR liveries, now available only on the secondary market at £40-150.
