Arnold's Sands

Published Last updated

Arnold's Sands Limited of Leighton Buzzard appears in a private owner wagon index. The same wagon index cross-refers Leighton Buzzard Sand Co. Ltd to Arnold's Sands. The firm traces its origins to a sand business set up in the 1860s by John Arnold, a builders' merchant in Camden Town who also extracted peat and loam at Kingswood Heath. Arnold's first sandpit opened at Stone Lane, Heath, around 1860. By 1894 Joseph Arnold had a depot on Union Street (now Grovebury Road), where Grovebury Pit produced building sand. Joseph Arnold's sons were running the business before his death in 1911, when the firm operated eight sand pits. In 1937 it was registered as a limited company, Joseph Arnold & Sons Ltd, with Albert and Ernest as directors. Arnold White Group was formed through a merger of two family-owned businesses, Joseph Arnolds Sands and Robinson & White. Many of the Arnold quarries are now worked by WBB Minerals Limited.

Arnold White Group says Arnolds Sands supplied sharp sands for specialist uses that included railways.
